ALTE Prague: Charles University hosts major conference on issues of fairness in language testing

The November meeting of ALTE at Charles University in Prague brought together over 120 delegates from around the world to discuss issues of fairness and quality management in language testing. Topics covered by the presentations included ways of ensuring test security, the appropriateness of test items and provisions for accommodating candidates with disabilities. Speakers included Professor Anthony Kunnan, Professor of Language Education at California State University, and Dr Piet van Avermaet from the University of Ghent as well as Dr Nick Saville, Dr Neil Jones, Juliet Wilson, Mike Gutteridge and Dittany Rose from Cambridge ESOL. PhDr. Jindrich Fryc from the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports in the Czech Republic described hosting the event as “an honour” in his opening remarks. He also noted how membership of ALTE has helped the developers of the Czech Language Certificate Exams ensure the quality of their examinations.
