Chennai children praised by Cambridge for English skills
7 May 2010
The proud parents of 170 young successful English students from Chennai Public School in India gathered for a special award ceremony last month, to recognise their children’s academic achievements.
The children – all students at the Chennai Public school – were awarded a Cambridge ESOL Young Learners English (YLE) certificate for their impressive performance in the popular English test for children.
“Parents continue to choose Cambridge Young Learners as the best way to start their children on the path to learning English,” said Cambridge ESOL’s Duncan Raynor who presented the certificates. “Choosing YLE provides children with a good solid foundation in English language skills and gives them the added accolade of having a certificate from the University of Cambridge – something both the children and their parents welcome.”
The ceremony, held at the Chennai Public school, was attended by 75 parents, teachers and representatives from University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations. Speaking at the event, the school’s Chairman Mr Balaji Dagupati expressed his joy on embarking on what he referred to as the ‘YLE ‘journey of learning’’. Also present was Dr Nalini Ravindran, the principal of the school, who spoke about the importance of the four skills assessed by the exam.
In the run up to offering YLE tests, the school organised teacher support workshops along with after-school candidate preparation classes. The ambitious students join the hundreds of thousands of children each year who take YLE as a stepping stone to higher level language qualifications.
