Close shave for charity fundraiser

Cambridge worker sports Wild West beard to work for brain injury charity

Last week, Terry Knox from Cambridge raised an impressive £350 for Headway Cambridgeshire by shaving his beard in the style of an Old Wild West Gunslinger. Terry, who works at University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (Cambridge ESOL), is taking part in a series of events in support of the Cambridge branch of Headway – the UK's leading brain injury charity.

Back at the start of October, Terry asked his work colleagues to vote for what style of beard they would like him to come to work with from “Half and Half”, “Chinless Wonder”, “Hairy Potter” and “The Gunslinger”.

“The Gunslinger” won hands down with over 100 votes – so as promised Terry reached for the electric shaver and got to work. Terry says:

“It's definitely not my normal look for work, but it's all for such a good cause it made it worthwhile. When we saw the difference Headway makes to those affected by brain injury, we all rallied round to get involved and I'm looking forward to the rest of the campaign.”

Andrew Gardner, Chief Executive Officer of Headway Cambridgeshire said:

"The staff at ESOL Cambridge are pulling out all the stops to meet their fundraising target of £2500 for us, and we are amazed at the personal commitment that Terry is prepared to make to support the whole team. Congratulations to him and to everyone at ESOL Cambridge."

The Customer Services Team at Cambridge ESOL, where Terry works, has already raised nearly £1,500, well over their original target of £1000 for Headway's Baton Challenge. They're hoping to reach their new target of £2,500 over the next few weeks. During this period, they will hold onto a special trophy which was presented to them earlier this month at a special launch ceremony (pictured). They have already organised a 50 mile Charity bike ride. Next up is a “dress up day”, where staff will be encouraged to don formal evening wear such as dinner suits and tiaras during work hours.
