Cambridge welcomes Boris Johnson’s call for effective migrant integration

26 February 2010

The University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations, the UK's largest provider of English language tests, has welcomed London Mayor Boris Johnson’s call for better migrant integration.

CEO Dr Michael Milanovic says, “Migrants coming to work and live in the UK play a key role in society. Investing in ESOL courses helps to break down language barriers, boost the economy and encourage social cohesion. Boris Johnson’s recent call for better ESOL provision in such a diverse and dynamic city must be applauded. It must however be met with action.”

Speaking at the Integrating Cities conference held on 22 February at City Hall, the Mayor called for a package of measures aimed at better integration of migrants in London. The Mayor also published in 2009, London Enriched, a strategy for promoting integration for refugees, developed with the London Strategic Migration Partnership. The Mayor wants there to be better ESOL (English for speakers of other languages) provision across London as he sees it as key to integration.
