Cambridge Michigan Language Assessments appoint new Chief Executive

6 October 2011

Dr Casey Marks has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer of Cambridge Michigan Language Assessments.

Dr Marks’ appointment is one of the first key postings in Cambridge Michigan Language Assessments – a joint language assessment venture between the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (Cambridge ESOL) and the University of Michigan English Language Institute Testing and Certification Division.

Dr Marks, who started his role on 26 September, was previously Chief Operating Officer at the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) in Chicago. He trained as a Psychometrician and holds a PhD in Education from the University of Chicago. In the fifteen years he has spent in non-profit management organizations, he has gained considerable experience in the areas of certification and credentialing. Casey specializes in a number of areas including the development and administration of computer-based testing. He will now head up Cambridge Michigan Language Assessments, a transatlantic collaboration which is boosting access to high quality internationally recognized language qualifications around the world. Dr Marks will head a senior management team which includes Mr Cris Betts from Cambridge ESOL who also begins his role as Deputy Executive Director this month.

Dr. Michael Milanovic, CEO of Cambridge ESOL, welcomes the appointment. He says:

"Casey’s vast experience in all aspects of exam development will lead the Cambridge Michigan Language Assessments at a time of rapid growth in the demand for high quality English language tests. To meet the needs of English test takers across the world we have assembled a team of experts from Cambridge and Michigan who have access to world-class research and knowledge. Casey will not only lead this team, but he will also add to this expertise."

James Penner-Hahn, Associate Dean for Budget at the University of Michigan adds "When we embarked on this joint venture last year, we envisioned an exciting future for Cambridge Michigan Language Assessments. We are delighted to add Casey to the team and look forward to working with him and his staff as they lead Cambridge Michigan Language Assessments into this future."

Cambridge Michigan Language Assessments was announced at the end of last year and one of its primary focuses is to promote the Michigan English language exams around the world. It also works closely with a range of stakeholders in different sectors to develop custom testing solutions – this includes commercial and educational organizations mainly in the US market.
