First and second language speakers: one size does not fit all, says language expert

7 November 2011

First and second language learners need different teaching and testing solutions, according to a report by language expert Dr Philida Schellekens.

Dr Schellekens’ report Teaching and Testing the Language Skills of First and Second Language Speakers was commissioned by Cambridge ESOL. It provides research evidence that the learning trajectories of first and second language speakers differ significantly. The report argues that requiring language learners to follow the same English language standards and tests as first language speakers can lead to outcomes which do not benefit the learners, their prospective employers or the taxpayer. She concludes that second language speakers need standards that reflect the development of their language skills, and tests that are fair, reliable and effective and that promote effective learning in the classroom. She advises that policy makers should pay attention to the implications of research when setting policy for teaching and assessment.
