Teaching English Remains a Strong Career Choice in the Recession, says Dublin's English Academy

31 March 2011

Despite the economic downturn, there are still incredible career opportunities for those who want to teach English say Dublin based Deirdre Byrne and Paul Seaver, directors of The English Academy, who has just expanded the range of English qualifications to include a top teaching award from the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (Cambridge ESOL).

“Despite the economic downturn, we have continued to invest in new services and we are offering a quality teaching English qualification set by a department of Cambridge University,” explains Paul Seaver. “This will help us to create further employment opportunities for both Irish and internationally based trainee teachers coming to study with us in Dublin and give them an edge when applying for jobs teaching English both in Ireland and overseas. Ireland's culturally rich heritage combined with Dublin's vibrant and welcoming atmosphere makes the city a top destination to study English or to train as a language teacher.”

The comments come in light of The English Academy being authorised by Cambridge ESOL to offer the popular CELTA qualification - the Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults - an internationally recognised qualification for people who want to teach English.

Cambridge ESOL's Chief Executive Mike Milanovic says: “It's great to see further opportunities opening up for people who want to develop a career in language teaching. Like all of our centres, The English Academy has met strict standards and will offer very high quality training for CELTA.”

The English Academy has over 500 students, including employees from the top multi-national businesses based in Ireland such as Google, Barclaycard and PayPal. In April last year (2010) the English Academy became the first language school in Ireland to offer a computer based version of the popular English test Cambridge English: First. Based in Upper O'Connell Street in the heart of Dublin, the school runs over 30 Cambridge classes each day for language learners from Elementary to Proficiency level. All its tutors are qualified Irish teachers with an average 15 years of teaching experience.
