Foreword

Dr Michael Milanovic, Chief Executive, University of Cambridge ESOL ExaminationsIn the past year, Cambridge ESOL has been involved in many new developments, ranging from the development of new examinations and the updating of existing ones, to new services for candidates and teachers. We have also developed blended-learning resources for university students that will form the basis of further projects to support learners.

All of this activity – and the continuing growth in the number of people taking our exams – rests on our commitment to ensuring that we meet the changing needs of language learners and teachers throughout the world, and the thousands of universities, employers, government agencies and other organisations that recognise the qualifications we provide. To support this, we continue to invest in a world-leading programme of research, development and communications and to work with partner organisations to share our knowledge and expertise.

Our work extends well beyond the provision of qualifications, with major commitments to social integration and the encouragement of multilingualism, especially the Skills for Life and Asset programmes in the UK and our continuing work with ALTE. In particular, the new English Profile project will allow us to make a major contribution to the learning and teaching of English for many years to come.

As part of the Cambridge Assessment Group, and of the University of Cambridge, we are uniquely well placed to play a positive role in the development of language learning and assessment, making an important contribution to international education.

Thousands of people throughout the world are instrumental in the success of the Cambridge ESOL exams. These include examiners, teachers, staff in our centres and the staff of Cambridge ESOL itself, and I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation for their continuing commitment.
