Introduction

Dr Michael Milanovic, Chief Executive, Cambridge ESOLThis Review covers the highlights of an extremely successful year, in which entries for Cambridge ESOL exams increased to well over two million. The number of institutions recognising our qualifications grew significantly, and we have been working closely with education authorities in a number of countries, providing expertise for national initiatives. This has been supported by our growing network of offices and local representatives.

Cambridge ESOL strives to stay at the forefront of language assessment and we constantly review our examinations and the support we provide for teachers, candidates and other stakeholders. 2007 has seen the introduction of new qualifications, reviews of existing ones and the expansion of computer-based testing to a wider range of exams. At the same time we have continued to use technology, especially the internet, to benefit our stakeholders, with the introduction of online results and a new website for candidates.

We continue to invest in a world-leading programme of research and development, which helps to keep our examinations up to date and relevant. 2007 saw the completion of several major reviews of qualifications such as the First Certificate in English (FCE), Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) and the Diploma in English Language Teaching to Adults (DELTA). We also introduced new examinations and an enhanced online service for candidates.

Thousands of people around the world are instrumental to our success, including examiners, teachers, the dedicated professionals who run our exam centres and our staff in Cambridge and our overseas offices. 2008 promises to be an even more successful year for Cambridge ESOL and I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation for their continuing commitment and enthusiasm.
