Meeting the needs of the future – innovation and modernisation

New approaches to assessment and computer-based testing

It is important that Cambridge ESOL meets the changing needs and preferences of learners and the demand for computer-based qualifications is steadily increasing. In response to this need we expanded our range of computer-based qualifications in the last 12 months through the introduction of computer-based versions of the Key English Test (KET), Business English Certificate (BEC) and Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT).

As well as the currently available tests, Cambridge ESOL is planning to offer an expanding range of other computer-based qualifications in 2008 with the introduction of an online version of the Business Language Testing Service (BULATS).

Computer-based testing

Computer-based testing offers many advantages both to centres and test takers, including more frequent and flexible test dates, faster results and easy, streamlined administration.

Every computer-based test is designed to ensure the same high standards as paper-based tests and has been extensively trialled before being released. They follow the same format as the paper-based versions to ensure that all tests are fair and equal.

Cambridge ESOL will continue to offer exams as paper-and-pen tests to exam centres throughout the world. This allows centres and candidates to choose which method they feel is best for their individual needs.

 Online results

As well as offering computer-based options, Cambridge ESOL also offers candidates the opportunity to receive their results online. This makes the results service faster and more direct.

Cambridge ESOL’s Results Online service was used by more than 130,000 candidates in 2007. On 3 August more than 80,000 candidates logged on, and peak visitor flow was more than 13,000 an hour.

In response to the changing needs and preferences of learners, we have expanded our range of computer-based qualifications, with further expansion planned for 2008
