Cambridge ESOL is a part of Cambridge Assessment, a department of the University of Cambridge. Cambridge Assessment – the trading name for the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES) – is Europe’s largest assessment agency, incorporating three major exam boards:

• Cambridge ESOL (University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations)
• Cambridge International Examinations (CIE)
• OCR (Oxford, Cambridge and RSA Examinations).

Cambridge Assessment is a not-for-profit organisation.

Celebrating 150 years

UCLES was established in 1858 to provide examinations for people who were not members of the University. It has provided international examinations since 1863 and examinations for learners of English since 1913, when the Certificate of Proficiency in English was introduced.
