Cambridge ESOL, a department of Cambridge University, has a long tradition in researching how to produce a fair and valid assessment of spoken performance. The Cambridge ESOL oral examiners must attend regular training sessions and are periodically monitored to ensure that the high quality standards are complied with. Contents: This seminar will focus on the format and assessment criteria in the speaking tests at the B1 and B2 levels. Classroom activities will be presented which motivate students to develop their communication skills. Participants will receive practical tips on how to build their students’ confidence and help them to perform to the best of their ability. Targets: Our aims are to identify what kind of language and speaking skills are representative of the B1 and B2 levels, to discuss motivating ways to practice these skills in class and to take a close look at the type of assessment criteria used to assess spoken performance.
