The “Use of English” paper tests knowledge of idiomatic expressions, collocations and precise knowledge of grammatical structures. A fair degree of flexibility and “feeling” for the language is required. Instead of seeing this part of the exam as a stumbling block, teachers can use these types of tasks to motivate their students to be more adventurous with their English. Contents: We will take a close look at the task types and testing aims in the “Use of English” papers at the B2 and C1 levels. Plenty of classroom activities will be presented which aim to develop the skills needed to perform well on this paper. Targets: To examine the task types and testing aims in this paper, to discuss exam tips and strategies, to discuss methods to promote more extensive knowledge of idiomatic expressions and collocations and to discuss methods which elicit more expressive and colourful use of the language.
