ADTE(E)LLS (Additional Diploma in Teaching English (ESOL) in the Lifelong Learning Sector)

Teaching qualifications
ADTE(E)LLS is a UK-only, Level 5 qualification for teachers wishing to teach English to speakers of other languages in the lifelong learning sector in England. It is ideal if you already hold or are working towards a recognised generic teaching qualification and are adding ESOL as an additional teaching subject.
Overview
ADTE(E)LLS is a 120-hour programme. You also need to complete a 75-hour teaching placement, four hours of which are assessed. Shorter programmes may be provided for groups who have CELTA.
During the ADTE(E)LLS course, you complete a number of oral and written assignments and take a language knowledge test.
| Unit 1 | ESOL learners: backgrounds and contexts |
| Unit 2 | Language learning theories, language analysis and awareness |
| Unit 3 | Understanding and developing language skills |
| Unit 4 | Planning learning, assessment and evaluation |
| Unit 5 | Delivering ESOL learning programmes |

ADTE(E)LLS is for teachers wishing to teach English to speakers of other languages in the lifelong learning sector in England. It is a 45-credit subject-specific teacher training qualification with a specific focus on ESOL subject knowledge.

ADTE(E)LLS will help you:
- develop your knowledge and understanding of language teaching and learning theory
- develop your understanding of the backgrounds, needs and contexts of ESOL learners
- develop your understanding of the factors which influence language learning
- acquire an appropriate depth and breadth of subject knowledge
- acquire subject-specific pedagogic knowledge and understanding
- extend your teaching skills to include specialist skills for language teaching.
Delta and ADTE(E)LLS
If you already have a Delta, you can take a faster pathway through the ADTE(E)LLS programme. You will need to attend parts of the course and to complete some of the assignments but will not have to repeat assessments already covered by Delta.
