A recognised qualification

ADTE(E)LLS is accredited by the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual).

Because it is awarded by Cambridge ESOL, part of the University of Cambridge, ADTE(E)LLS is recognised, highly respected and a benchmark for quality.

Deepen your knowledge of the lifelong learning sector

ADTE(E)LLS is for teachers wishing to teach English to speakers of other languages in the lifelong learning sector in England. It is a 45-credit subject-specific teacher training qualification with a specific focus on ESOL subject knowledge.

'Additional' means additional to a generic qualification. It is assumed that you will have completed or are in the process of completing a generic Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS).

ADTE(E)LLS will help you:

  • develop your knowledge and understanding of language teaching and learning theory
  • develop your understanding of the backgrounds, needs and contexts of ESOL learners
  • develop your understanding of the factors which influence language learning
  • acquire an appropriate depth and breadth of subject knowledge
  • acquire subject-specific pedagogic knowledge and understanding
  • extend your teaching skills to include specialist skills for language teaching.

Delta and ADTE(E)LLS

If you already have a Delta, you can take a faster pathway through the ADTE(E)LLS programme. You will need to attend parts of the course and to complete some of the assignments but will not have to repeat assessments already covered by Delta.
