BEC Competition T&C
- The Competition
- This competition is run by Cambridge ESOL on behalf of the Chancellor, Masters and Scholars of the University of Cambridge ("Cambridge ESOL").
- This competition will begin on 15 April 2009 and end at midnight GMT on 30 June 2009
- This competition is only open to individuals over 18 years of age who:
- have achieved IELTS level 5.5 or above (required for all courses);
- have achieved an intermediate level of English (Common European Framework level B2) (required for the Teaching Business English course); and
- are experienced English language teachers of secondary or adult students and have a familiarity with working with computers (required for the ‘Using New Technology in Language Learning’ course).
- Competition Entries
- Entries received after midnight GMT on 30 June 2009 will not qualify for the prize draw and will be destroyed.
- Incomplete entries will not be accepted.
- Entries must be submitted in English.
- Each entry must include an original idea for incorporating technology into teaching Business English. Each original idea may only be entered once.
- By submitting your entry you confirm that Cambridge ESOL will be beneficially entitled to the copyright and any and all other intellectual property rights in your entry notwithstanding any subsequent disqualification or forfeit. You irrevocably and unconditionally waive all rights under Chapter IV of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988.
- Cambridge ESOL reserves the right to disqualify any entry that Cambridge ESOL believes in its sole discretion to be in breach of these terms and conditions.
- The Prize
- Each of the two winning entries will receive a prize package comprised of the following:
- a two-week residential course with the Bell International Teacher Campus in Cambridge, United Kingdom including accommodation, breakfasts and dinners (excluding any social programme or other optional activities);
- travel to and from Cambridge, which travel will be arranged by Cambridge ESOL.
- £100 pounds sterling towards the cost of lunches and incidental expenses during the course
subject to the following conditions.
- The prize will be subject to the standard terms and conditions for the Bell International Teacher Development residential courses. Such terms and conditions are available here:

- Cambridge ESOL will consult with the two winners before booking travel to and from Cambridge but the final decision on times, modes of transport and transport provider rests with Cambridge ESOL at its sole discretion.
- By submitting your entry you confirm you will be available to attend the course.
- By submitting your entry you agree, if selected as a winner, to participate in all publicity reasonable requested by Cambridge ESOL including without limitation press, print and online publicity including publication of both your name and photo.
- Cambridge ESOL cannot and does not guarantee the winners will have or be able to obtain an entry permit to the United Kingdom for the purpose of attending the course. The winners are solely responsible for obtaining a UK visa or otherwise at the winners’ sole cost.
- Cambridge ESOL will not provide any insurance cover for the winners, including without limitation travel insurance. The winners will be solely responsible for obtaining any insurance cover they require at their own cost. Travel insurance may be provided by Bell International as per the Bell International Terms and Conditions referenced above.
- Prizes are not transferrable and cannot be exchanged by the winners for cash or credit or any other product.
- Judging
- Judging will be undertaken by a panel of judges from Bell International.
- Entries will be assessed based on the following criteria:
- Creativity
- Practicality
- Originality
- The judges’ decision will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.
- The two winners will be selected within 7 days of the close of the close of the competition.
- Two winners will be contacted, no other entries will be acknowledged directly.
- Cambridge ESOL will make all reasonable endeavours to contact the winners within 7 days of selecting the winning entries. If either winner cannot be contacted within that time their prize shall be forfeited and the judges shall select a new winning entry.
- Once the winners have been notified the winners will be required to confirm within a then specified time frame that they will attend the course and have a valid right to enter the United Kingdom for the purpose of attending the course.
- If the winners are unable to attend the course he/she selected when submitting the winning entry, or is unable to obtain entry to the United Kingdom, or in unable to travel at the times and by the mode(s) selected by Cambridge ESOL or does not confirm his/her attendance and right of entry within the time frame provided, Cambridge ESOL reserves the right at its sole discretion to make alternative arrangements with that winner for a prize deemed by Cambridge ESOL to have an equivalent value to the prize described herein or alternatively to declare that prize forfeit and select a new winning entry.
- General
- Cambridge ESOL accepts no responsibility for any costs incurred by any entrant participating in this competition.
- Cambridge ESOL shall not be liable for any delay in, or for failure to perform, its obligations if that delay or failure is caused by circumstances beyond its control including, without limitation, weather, transport cancellations or delays, fires, strikes, insurrection, riots, embargoes, inability to obtain supplies including course cancellation of the course by Bell International, transportation strikes or delays, refusal or revocation of admission to the Bell Course or UK entry permit or regulations of any civil or military authority.
- Cambridge ESOL decisions are final and no correspondence will be entered into.
- This competition shall be governed by the laws of England and subject to the jurisdiction of English Courts.
