Phase 1
Listen and Respond
The candidate can usually listen and respond to simple spoken language and single-step instructions, responding appropriately to the interlocutor’s questions, participating in discussion and confirming understanding or seeking clarification where necessary.
Speak to Communicate
The candidate can usually communicate basic information, feelings and opinions on familiar topics, speaking clearly for meaning to be understood by a sympathetic native speaker and expressing and seeking information through questions, statements and a range of structures appropriate to Entry 1*.
Phase 2
Listen and Respond
The candidate can usually listen and respond to simple spoken language and single-step instructions, responding appropriately to the interlocutor’s questions and to recorded texts, and participating effectively and appropriately in discussion with their partner.
Speak to Communicate
(as in Phase 1)
Engage in Discussion
The candidate can usually take part in simple and familiar exchanges on familiar topics, expressing information, feelings and simple views, listening and responding to their partner’s feelings and opinions and indicating broad agreement or disagreement.
