Talking about Ways of Travelling
Aim: |
to raise awareness of and practise using different functions when discussing a topic |
Target Audience: |
students |
Relevance to SfL: |
Speaking and Listening Entry 3, Phases 1b and 2b |
Organisation: |
individually then in pairs |
Materials needed: |
- Ask students to write down as many forms of transport as they can think of.
- Students work in pairs and choose five forms of transport from their list, preferably five forms they have used, as these will be easier to discuss.
- Hand out the worksheet: Talking about Ways of Travelling and talk through the example with the class. Ask them to give extra ideas for each of the columns, and any ideas of other functions they could use in a discussion (e.g. agreeing/disagreeing).
- Students fill in the worksheet for their five forms of transport. They can discuss this in pairs, but both students should complete a table. Go round and check. Students should only make brief notes, to help them structure their speaking.
- Ask students to form new pairs and to discuss what forms of transport they like and don’t like, and the advantages and disadvantages of each. Go round the class and listen. Write down any mistakes you hear and correct them with the whole class at the end.
Notes/Variations:
- Adapt the table for different topics of discussion
Extension
Students can use the preparation for the above task to form the basis of a talk for Phase 1b of the Speaking and Listening exam. Their partner can listen and prepare questions about the talk. Each student will, of course, need a different topic.
