Answers and Discussion

Look at the discussion of the points raised by the sample Form/questionnaire task. What would you recommend to your students as the most efficient strategies for dealing with this task?

  1. What was the relevance of the topic area of this task?
The home part of everyday life is a relevant and familiar topic area for learners at Entry level. Students should expect to complete forms and questionnaires dealing with this and other everyday topics.
  2. How did you know how much to write?
Forms will usually contain a larger section which will require a longer response. Here the candidate will be instructed to write in sentences. Elsewhere, single words or phrases are appropriate.
  3. Which features of the form are appropriate to all forms?
Personal information – name, address, telephone number, college – are always likely to appear on a form at Entry 1. Candidates are here assessed on their ability to write legibly, using upper and lower case appropriately.
  4. How authentic is section 3 of the task?
A form will not usually require you to write in sentences. This requirement ensures sentence features can be assessed. Sometimes the candidate will be asked to write a number of sentences (in this sample task, two). At other times it will not be specified.
