Phase |
Task Types and Format |
Timing |
1a |
Candidates are asked for their name, for identification purposes only, and for their marksheet. The interlocutor then gives the candidates a short, informal, lead-in discussion task to prepare them for the formal presentation in Phase 1b. The interaction is primarily between the two candidates, but the interlocutor may ask prompt questions where necessary to elicit and encourage elaboration of opinions, feelings, wishes and suggestions. |
3 minutes |
1b |
Each candidate is required to give a two-minute formal presentation in response to a written statement thematically linked to the Phase 1a discussion. Candidates have one minute to prepare and are encouraged to make notes. After each candidate’s presentation, the other candidate and the assessor are given the opportunity to comment and ask questions. |
Level 1
Level 2 |
2a |
Candidates listen to two recordings consisting of either two parallel texts or two extracts from a single text. Candidates hear the recordings once only. Candidates each answer two questions about each recording. The questions are presented and answered orally but the candidates are able to make notes. |
5 minutes |
2b |
Candidates first talk together about a theme related to the topic introduced in Phase 2a. The interlocutor asks prompt questions where necessary to ensure satisfactory completion of the task. In the second part of this phase, the interlocutor joins in the interaction, asking extension questions in order to lead the discussion into other areas and contexts.
At Level 2, the assessor also joins in the discussion for this final part of the interaction. |
