Skills for Life Writing Levels 1 and 2 – Leaflets and Information Sheets
Task Description
A leaflet or information sheet is a piece of writing that is going to be read by many different people. Its purpose is to give information.
| Language | Who you are writing for and what you are writing about will determine the style, register and language you will use.
| |||
| Style | This should be attractive for the reader but at the same time the message must be succinct. Bullet points, underlining and boxes can be effective.
| Register | The relationship between the writer and the reader will determine the register used. Again, it must be consistent.
| Functions | All leaflets or information sheets will be informative and most will have language of advice, persuasion or warning, but this will depend on why you are writing and the topic. Most leaflets are written using present tenses.
| Vocabulary | This should be directly related to the topic.
| |||
| Organisation | You want to attract the reader from the beginning and a good layout and organisation can do this.
| |||
| Title | Give the leaflet or information sheet a title which tells the reader about the subject and makes him/her want to read it. Use headings for different sections.
| |||
| Paragraphs | Don’t forget an introduction, body and conclusion.
| |||
| Introduction | The first paragraph could be a message to the reader informing them what they will learn by reading the sheet.
| Body | Paragraphs should be short and precise and in a logical order. Use headings for each different topic.
| Conclusion | This should end the leaflet in a friendly way. | |||
