DOs and DON'Ts

Read each question very carefully.

Identify the target reader, your role as writer and your purpose in writing. Write in an appropriate style.

Decide exactly what information you are being asked to give.

Check which task type you are being asked to write.

Organise your ideas and make a plan before you write.

Select your Part 3 question carefully. Consider the vocabulary, grammatical structures and register required by the task.

Allow time to check through what you have written.

Remember that, in order to get a good mark, you not only need to write accurately but also to demonstrate a good range of vocabulary and structures.

Make sure you remember to punctuate work correctly.

Don’t write an answer for tasks 3a and 3b. You must choose only one to answer.

Don't write answers that are much longer than the recommended word count as this means you may have included a lot of irrelevant material. Plan your answer carefully to avoid this.

Don't attempt a work-related question (Task 3) unless you have the appropriate experience of a work situation.

Don't use a pencil.

Don’t write addresses on letters

Don’t write a draft/rough copy of your writing and then try to write a good copy - you will not have time

Don’t leave out any required information.

Don't attempt a task 3 question if you feel unsure about the format required.

Don’t spend much more than the suggested amount of time on each task or you will run out of time.
