BEC Higher Reading Part 1

Task Description

In this task, candidates match a statement with either a single text or one of five short related texts.

What texts are used?
Product descriptions, a set of advertisements e.g. for different business courses, notices or messages, book or video reviews, or short newspaper items on related topics.

What text types are used?
Authentic business-related texts.

What skill is being tested?
Understanding the language of the statement and relating it to the meaning of the text, which is expressed in different language.

Understanding the Task

This first task is a matching task. Candidates are given 8 sentences. Each of these is a statement which can be matched with just one of the five short texts. Candidates have to read the sentences and then find the text each sentence applies to. Candidates are being tested on their ability to understand the sentence and then to scan a text to find a second sentence that has the same meaning.

One way to understand the task is to do it yourself, thinking carefully about what you are doing and how you work out the answers. Look at the sample Part 1 task from a past BEC Higher paper. Complete the task, thinking about how you are doing it.
