BEC Higher Reading Part 2

Task Description

In this task, candidates have to read a text and then identify the correct sentence to fill each gap from a set of eight sentences.

What texts are used?
Business articles from newspapers or magazines, books on business-related topics, and company literature such as annual reports.

What skill is being tested?
Candidates must show detailed understanding of the text and the features of its structure.

How long is the text in Part 2?
Here you have a text of about 450 words.

How many sentences are there to choose from?
Six sentences have been taken out of the text. Candidates have to put the sentences back into their correct place. They are given 8 sentences (one is an example and one is not needed).

Understanding the Task

One way to understand the task is to do it yourself, thinking carefully about what you are doing and how you work out the answers. Look at the sample Part 2 task from a past BEC Higher paper. Complete the task, thinking about how you are doing it.

Answers

Things to consider

Now look at these questions about how you approached this task and consider your answers.

  1. Did you read through the whole text first or look at the sentences first?

  2. Did you read in a general or detailed way?

  3. Did you need to read through the whole text again once you'd completed all the gaps?

  4. Were there certain types of words that you concentrated on?

  5. What do students have to be aware of when looking for the correct sentence?

  6. Could more than one option fit into the gap?

  7. What should students do if they realise they have chosen the wrong option?

  8. Why is it a good idea for students to underline the key words on both sides of the gap?

  9. What lexical connections should the students look for?

  10. Do you think this part of the test will take longer to complete than others?
