BEC Higher Reading Part 4
Task Description
In this task, candidates complete a gapped text by choosing a word
from an option of four. There are 10 gaps to complete.
What texts are used?
The general and business press, company literature and books on
topics such as management.
What text types are used?
A single authentic business-related text.
What skill is being tested?
Lexical and collocational knowledge. Students will need a wide knowledge
of both general and business vocabulary, including word-partnerships
and phrasal verbs.
Understanding the Task
Part 4 consists of a single text of about 250 words. This is the
'multiple-choice cloze'. This means a text with 10 one-word gaps
where your students are given 4 words to choose from for each gap.
Some gaps target specifically 'business vocabulary'; others target
vocabulary in more general use but tested within a business context.
One way to understand the task is to do it yourself, thinking carefully
about what you are doing and how you work out the answers. Look
at the sample Part 4 task from a past BEC Higher paper. Complete
the task, thinking about how you are doing it.

Things to consider
Now look at these questions about how you approached this task and
consider your answers.
- Did you read through the whole text before you tried to choose
the right word?
- Did you look closely at the words around each gap?
- Did you try to predict the missing word before looking at the
options?
- Did you read the text again after you had completed the missing
words?
- Should students read the text only once?
- What kinds of words are tested in this task?
- Is there only one grammatically correct answer?
- Could one of the 'wrong' options be very similar to the correct
option?
- Is it a good idea to pencil in the word above the gap?
