BEC Higher Reading Part 6
Task Description
Candidates identify words that have been introduced into a text
in error.
What texts are used?
The general and business press, company literature and books on
topics such as management.
What text types are used?
A single authentic business-related text. The text contains twelve
numbered lines, which are the test items. Further lines at the end
may complete the test, but these are not test items.
What skill is being tested?
The type of checking and editing students will need to do in business,
even in their first language.
Understanding the Task
In the final part of the test, students are given a text and must
decide if each line of the text is correct or whether it contains
an extra, unnecessary (and incorrect) word. They are being tested
on their ability to check work for errors - a skill they will also
need in the writing paper.
One way to understand the task is to do it yourself, thinking carefully
about what you are doing and how you work out the answers. Look
at the sample Part 6 task from a past BEC Higher paper. Complete
the task, thinking about how you are doing it.

blank space on their Answer Sheet?
- Could there be more than one mistake per line?
- What kinds of words are tested in this task?
- What combinations of words in one sentence should students
look out for?
- Should students read the text line by line to look for the
errors?
