An Overview of BEC Higher Speaking

Paper Format

The standard format is 2 examiners and 2 candidates. One examiner acts as interlocutor, managing the interaction, and gives a global or impression mark, while the other examiner assesses in detail but takes no part in the conversation. The three parts of the test allow for different patterns of interaction and give the candidates the opportunity to use different speaking skills. If there is an uneven number of candidates, a group of three is allowed. In this case, the test lasts 22 minutes.

Timing

1

Interview

After initial introductions, the interlocutor chooses two different personalised questions which are work-related. Each candidate is then also asked a more general question about, for example, working practices or the role of technology in their country.

2

Mini-presentation

Each candidate receives a different card, with three different topics on it. S/He then has one minute to prepare a one-minute presentation. Both candidates prepare at the same time, making notes if they wish. Then, after the examiner has read out the topic, the first candidate gives their presentation, while the other one listens carefully in order to be able to ask a question on the talk after the one minute. The second candidate has a few seconds, if desired, to look at their notes again before the whole procedure is repeated.

3

Collaborative task and follow-up questions

The examiner gives both candidates the same task to silently read to themselves. They have 30 seconds to do this and then 3 minutes in which to do the task. They have to discuss the task together, giving reasons and opinions. The examiner plays no role at all. During the discussion the examiner does not interact with the candidates, but afterwards asks the candidates questions which are an extension of the topic.
