BEC Higher Speaking Part 2
Task Description
What is this task?
Candidates have to give a mini-presentation. At the end of the presentation,
the listening candidate, who is allowed to make notes, should ask
a question related to what s/he has just heard.
What is the interaction?
During the presentation the candidate speaks individually and addresses
both his/her partner and the interlocutor. S/He then answers the
question put by the listening candidate.
How long does this part last?
Candidates have 1 minute of preparation time, followed by 1 minute
to speak. Both the question and the answer at the end should be
brief.
What skills are necessary for this part?
Candidates need to be able to develop the skill of sustaining a
long turn and producing an extended piece of discourse which is
both coherent and cohesive. It's also important to listen actively
to the other candidate and be ready to ask a relevant question.

Things to consider
What makes a good presentation for the BEC Higher Speaking test?
Look at the following statements and decide whether they are true
or false.
- There should be a clear beginning, middle and an end.
- You should look down at your notes the whole time.
- Talk as quickly as you can so that you can fit in as much information
as possible.
- Organise your information so that the main points are clear.
- Use eye contact to communicate with your audience.
- Leave a fairly long pause between each point you make.
- Speak spontaneously as ideas come into your head.
- Ignore the other candidate as far as possible.
- Use linking words to signpost your talk.
- If you finish early, then just wait until the minute is over.
- If you notice you've made a grammatical error, correct yourself
briefly.
- Make use of your preparation notes to keep yourself on track.
