BEC Higher Writing Part 1
Task Description
What sort of input do students receive?
- Students are given a rubric which consists of:
- a brief description of the situation
- the tasks students have to do
- There is usually some kind of graphic input which may be line
graphs, bar charts or pie charts.
- These graphs are the type which can be found in the business
pages of newspapers, company reports and brochures.
What do students have to do?
- Students have to write a short report based on the graphic input.
- They have to analyse the graphic information and express it
in words.
- They may be expected to describe, compare and contrast, and
interpret the information.
- They should not invent information, but rather provide an accurate
description of what they see.
- Students must make sure that the figures and numbers they use
in the report are accurate.
- The report should be about 120-140 words long.
- Students should use an appropriate report format e.g. with headings,
introduction and conclusion.
- They should show cohesion by using linking words, e.g. similarly,
in contrast to, whereas.
What skill is being assessed?
The ability to interpret graphic information correctly and to write
concisely

Part 1 of the BEC Higher Writing sample material in the BEC Handbook
(page 80) and consider how you would approach it.
