Correction and Giving Feedback

Writing correction and feedback is a crucial component of any BEC preparation course. Some students may be resistant to doing writing and it is crucial that they see that by doing writing 'there is something in it for them'. This means they need to receive more than their work returned with their mistakes corrected in red pen. Underline ambitious vocabulary, good grammar structures and linking words or phrases with a highlighter. This will help to balance out any negative feedback and show students what they are doing right.

Correcting writing can be a process that the student is part of. Using a correction code will greatly help your students identify their own mistakes. One approach is to use an error correction code or to mark in the margin how many mistakes a line contains.

Below is an example of a correction code. These symbols can be put next to the error in the written work for students to identify (this can be done in the first 10 minutes of a lesson).
