Out of Class Activities
Here are some ways YOU can practise Writing
outside the classroom
- Read as many articles in the business section of newspapers
and in business magazines as you can. This will help you to:
- increase your knowledge of the business world (very important
for Writing Part 2 because you will have to use a lot of your
own ideas in the answer)
- increase your range of business vocabulary and expressions
(this will also help with the Reading paper)
- Keep a lexical notebook, either on paper or electronically.
- Divide the notebook into sections, for example, Grammar,
Vocabulary, Writing Numbers, Useful Introductions and Conclusions,
Forms of Business Correspondence
- Under each heading, keep a note of the most important things
you have learned in class.
- In the Grammar section, you could divide each page
into two. On one side write down your most common mistakes
and on the other the correct version.
- When you make a note of new Vocabulary, don't forget
the word partnerships. An example of this is

Also write a sentence which illustrates
the word you have learned.
- In the Writing Numbers section, make a note of the
ways numbers and symbols are written in English, especially
noting the position of commas and where the currency symbols
are placed.
- Under Useful Introductions and Conclusions, write
down different ways to introduce and conclude reports and
proposals, as well as business correspondence.
- Forms of Business Correspondence can be used to remind
you how to start and finish letters, faxes and emails.
- These activities will provide you with a good record of everything
you have learned during the course and will help you with your
revision, as well as being a quick way to remind yourself about
standard elements of business writing when you are doing your
homework.
- When you start your course, work with a good dictionary to
help you find the right word. However, later on try to work without
a dictionary, putting a question mark (?) in the margin if you
are not sure about a word.
- Keep to the word limit. And try to do the homework task in
50 minutes.
- It is important for Part 2 Writing to vary your vocabulary and
range of grammar.
- Look at a piece of writing you have written and eliminate unnecessary
repetition by finding synonyms for these words.
- Try to use pronouns, relative pronouns and linking words such
as however, with reference to, furthermore and so on to make your
work more cohesive.
- Look at sample answers to Part 2 questions - see Marking
Part 2 (PDF).
