Punctuation Activities
- Focus on individual punctuation marks
Teach the correct use of punctuation just as you would the correct
use of grammar, etc. For example, you could ask students to look
at the punctuation of a text you've used in class for reading
skills work. Ask them to highlight the punctuation marks, and
name them, explaining the purpose of each one.
- Punctuating unpunctuated texts
Give students a text with all the punctuation removed and ask
them to punctuate it. Or, omit only one type of punctuation (for
example, commas) and ask them to decide where these should go.
- Punctuation dictations
Make the connection between pronunciation and punctuation. Give
two students the same text, one which is punctuated, and one with
no punctuation. Ask student A to read the punctuated text to student
B who should insert appropriate punctuation marks. Both students
should compare their texts at the end, discussing any differences,
problems, etc.
