BULATS Listening – Part 1 – Multiple Choice – short conversations or monologues

Task Description

What sort of text do candidates listen to?

  • Part 1 consists of 10 short monologues or conversations.
  • The main purpose of each is to provide information.
  • The extracts are short so that candidates can gradually tune in to the spoken language.
The extracts are unrelated, so the answer to one does not affect answers to others.
  • Part 1 covers Levels 1-3.

What do the candidates have to do?

  • There are 10 multiple-choice questions, one on each monologue or conversation. For each question, candidates have to choose one of the three options (A-C).
  • For the 3 options, the first 5 questions use graphics, e.g. pictures, graphs or diagrams, and the next 5 use text.
  • Candidates hear each monologue or conversation twice.

What skill is being assessed?

The ability to understand spoken English used in a range of work-related situations, and to extract factual information.

How long does this section last?

  • Each monologue or conversation lasts 15 to 30 seconds.
  • Each is heard twice before the next question.
  • Candidates are given 5 seconds to read each set of three options.

Understanding the Task

To understand better how candidates need to approach this task, it may help you to do the activity yourself, and analyse what you had to do to choose the right answer.

Look at these two questions - which are at about Level 2 - together with the relevant tapescript. Complete the task, thinking about how you are doing it.
