Topic Jumping

Aim:

to train students to move quickly from one topic to another

Target Audience:

students

Relevance to CPE:

Speaking Part 1

Organisation:

groups of three or four

Materials needed:

Worksheet

  1. Copy the questions from the worksheet onto small cards - one question per card - or just photocopy the sheet and cut into question strips. Prepare a set of cards/slips for each group. There are enough questions for you to make two different sets so you can use the activity twice.

  2. Give each group a set of question cards. Tell them to shuffle them and place them face downwards in the centre of the table.

  3. Then student A takes a card, reads it aloud to student B who must answer the question. Student B then takes a card and reads it aloud to student C who answers it, and so on.

  4. They continue until all the cards have been used.

It is very important for students to ask and answer very quickly to keep the rhythm going and to really practise quick topic changes.

Notes/Variations:

  • Do the same activity but in pairs, with Student A asking all the questions in quick succession to Student B. Then change over and repeat.
