Answers and Discussion

  1. Did you read the whole passage carefully before beginning?
It’s a good idea to read through the list of headings first and then skim the whole passage.

  2. Did you read through all the headings provided before you chose the correct one for each paragraph/section?
It’s a good idea to skim quickly through all the headings before beginning to match them to a paragraph or section. It is best to start with one that appears easy and move on from there. If an example is given, be sure to cross it off the list.

  3. Were the number of headings supplied equal to the number of paragraphs or sections?
There are always more headings than paragraphs.

  4. Did finding the heading for each paragraph or section involve finding a single word or phrase?
No, but finding the topic sentence of a paragraph or section can help. It is also useful to note key words that are repeated. However, some of the listed headings may contain words or phrases that appear in exactly the same form in the reading passage but they are not suitable as headings for the whole paragraph or section.

  5. Was it necessary to understand every word to complete the activity correctly?
    No.

  6. Did you need to be quite sure you had chosen the correct heading for one paragraph or sections before moving onto the next?
No. sometimes two heading might seem possible for a particular paragraph or section, in which case it is a good idea to note both possible options at the first attempt and then to narrow it down to one later when others have been eliminated.
