Formality of Expressions

Aim:

to give students an opportunity to test their awareness of levels of formality in expressions for letter writing

General Training Writing Task 1

Organisation:

pairs, groups or whole class

Materials needed:

Worksheet

  1. Ask students to complete the columns on the worksheet in pairs, groups or as a whole class.

  2. When students have completed their answers, correct them and give feedback.

  3. You could then ask students to suggest the missing neutral or informal equivalent of each expression.

Notes/Variations:

  • Alternatively you could put each expression on a strip of paper and give the expressions in jumbled order to groups of students. Students would then have to sort the expressions into 3 categories: 1. letter openings 2. signalling the letter is ending 3. letter closings. Students could then do steps 1, 2 and 3 above.
