Formality of Expressions
Aim: |
to give students an opportunity to test their awareness of levels of formality in expressions for letter writing |
Target Audience: |
students |
Relevance to IELTS: |
General Training Writing Task 1 |
Organisation: |
pairs, groups or whole class |
Materials needed: |
- Ask students to complete the columns on the worksheet in pairs, groups or as a whole class.
- When students have completed their answers, correct them and give feedback.
- You could then ask students to suggest the missing neutral or informal equivalent of each expression.
Notes/Variations:
- Alternatively you could put each expression on a strip of paper and give the expressions in jumbled order to groups of students. Students would then have to sort the expressions into 3 categories: 1. letter openings 2. signalling the letter is ending 3. letter closings. Students could then do steps 1, 2 and 3 above.
