Answers and Discussion

  1. What type of listening skill is being tested here?
These questions test the ability to listen for detail. Multiple Choice items may also test understanding of roles, relationships, attitudes and opinions.

  2. How many letters can you choose for each question?
One only. If two letters are chosen, the candidate will not get a mark.

  3. Does it matter how you mark your answer on the Question Paper?
No. Candidates can mark their answers in the way they find easiest – e.g. with a circle or a tick. However, when transferring answers to the Answer Sheet, the letter of the correct answer must be clearly written. It is not necessary to write the words as well.

  4. In which question, 9 or 10, does the correct answer come just from the customer?
Question 10. The customer says, 'The port would be fine.'

  5. In which question, 9 or 10, do you need to combine information given by the agent and the customer to get the right answer?
Question 9. The customer says, 'I'll go for the highest.' The Agent has just stated that the highest cover is premium rate, so the answer is C – Premium.

  6. Are the words in the recording the same as the words on the Question Paper?
In this case, the key words (e.g. premium, depot, port) are unchanged, but candidates have to recognise that, for example, when the customer says 'I'll go for the highest' he is referring back to the 'Premium' insurance, which the agent previously said was the 'highest comprehensive cover.’ Candidates may therefore have to recognise paraphrases of the words they hear and be aware of reference words in the text.
