ILEC Listening Part 4
Task Description
What sort of text do candidates listen to?
They hear a series of five themed monologues, of approximately 30 seconds each. The whole sequence is heard twice.
What do the candidates have to do?
There are two tasks, each with five questions (ten questions in total). Each set of five questions requires selection of the correct option from a list of six. Candidates may choose how they approach this task, but the set of texts will only be heard twice, during which time both tasks must be completed. In some cases the information to answer Task 2 may come before the information needed to answer Task 1.
What listening skills are being tested?
Candidates need to be able to identify the gist of what they hear in order to identify speakers and topics, interpret context and recognise function and attitude.
What text types are used?
In this part, the extracts have no specific context, but are linked instead by theme. For example, five accountants may be talking about similar issues, their experience of working in different areas of finance, their opinions about certain developments in the profession, etc.
