An Overview of ILEC Reading


Paper Format
The paper consists of a range of law-related texts and accompanying tasks. There are six Parts in all: Parts 1-3 focus on Use of English while Parts 4-6 focus on Reading.

Timing
1 hour and 15 minutes

Marks
Questions 1-36 (Use of English tasks) carry one mark each. Questions 37-54 (Reading tasks) carry two marks each.

Lexical (affixation and compounding)

12 Two short texts, each containing six gaps. Candidates must form an appropriate word to complete each gap using the given base words.

Multiple matching

Reading for detail and gist

6 A single text divided into four sections, or four related short texts preceded by multiple matching questions.

Gapped text

Cohesion, coherence, text structure, global meaning

6 A text from which sentences have been removed and placed in jumbled order after the text. Candidates must decide from where in the text the sentences have been removed.

Multiple-choice

Reading for detail, gist, opinion, implication and referencing

6 A text followed by four-option multiple-choice questions.
