KET Listening Part 1

Task Description

What is the listening material in Part 1?
There are five unconnected short dialogues, plus an example dialogue.

What sort of language is used?
The dialogues are of neutral or informal register - for example, a conversation in a shop or a phone call between friends. The language functions covered include:
· asking for and giving information (directions, prices, dates, times, etc.)
· talking about the future (arrangements, plans, the weather, etc.)
· expressing preferences
· describing people, objects and places
· making suggestions

How is the task structured?
There are five questions (1-5) and a completed example (0). Each question is answered by choosing one of three pictures or one of three word- or number-based options (A-C). The question is also recorded, to help candidates to focus on what is required.

What do candidates have to do?
While they listen, candidates should put a tick in the correct box (A, B or C). They then shade lozenges on the answer sheet in the time given at the end of the test, to indicate their answers.

How many marks are available?
5

Understanding the Task
To understand how students need to approach this task, try doing the following activity yourself, and think about what you had to do to choose the right answer. Before you look at the questions, think about Things to Consider. Then move onto the Questions. Finally, go to Answers and Discussion, which gives guidance on preparing students.
