Tips for Teachers

KET Listening Part 5 Understanding the Task
Answers and Discussion

1. What is the topic of this Part 5?
A museum (the general topic is history and free time activities).

2. Is this recording likely to be informal or neutral?
Neutral, because it is information to the general public.

3. How do the words in italics help the student?
They guide students towards the specific word or words required in each space.

Tip: Remind students that they should not copy the words in italics as part of their answers.

4. What types of word are missing?
A noun is required in questions 21, 22 and 23; question 24 needs a number (price) and question 25 a time, which can be expressed in figures rather than words.
NB: recognisable spelling is accepted on all questions 21-25.

5. Is a monologue task likely to be more or less difficult for students? Why?
The exam statistics often point to Part 5 being the more difficult of the two note-taking tasks. This may be because there is no second voice to 'cue' the answers by highlighting the content of each question. On the other hand, candidates only have to process one voice, which is more straightforward.

6. Did the answers come at regular intervals through the recording?
Yes. This can be seen from looking at the tapescript of this task. Point this out to students, explaining that they will always have enough time to write down one answer before hearing the next.

7. How helpful is it for students to predict the type of answer they will hear?
Very. Doing this will help them to listen out for the appropriate section of the text and to identify the correct answer. Here, they know from looking at the question paper that 21, 22 and 23 all require nouns; 24 needs a price in £; 25 tests a time.
