Activities List

Alphabet Soup: Spelling

Aim:

to revise and practise the English alphabet

Target Audience:

students

Relevance to KET:

Listening Parts 4 and 5

Organisation:

groups of four to six

Materials needed:

a set of 26 small cards for each group, each with a different letter written on it (in capitals), or Scrabble letters

1. Hand out the letter cards, one or two per student (this depends on the size of the class).

2. Call out a short word which has no two letters the same (e.g. 'red' not 'seed').

3. Ask the students who think they have the letters of that word to stand up.

4. Ask those students to come to the front of the class and arrange themselves in correct letter order. They should then 'spell' the word aloud.

5. Check with the rest of the class whether the spelling is correct.

6. If a letter is wrong, the student with that letter should sit down and the student with the correct letter should take their place.
