Activities List

Key Words

Aim:

to train students to listen for important content words

Target Audience:

students

Relevance to KET:

all parts of the Listening paper

Organisation:

whole class activity

Materials needed:

teacher's 'script' (see activity)

1. Explain that you are going to read some sentences to the students.

2. Ask students to write down one or two words (not more than this) that they think will help them to remember each sentence.

3. Explain that if they choose important 'content' words, it should help them to remember each sentence more easily.

4. Suggest students then compare their words and then try to say what each sentence was (or what it was about).

5. If necessary, point out that there aren't correct answers, but certain words will be more important than others. Discuss how easy it was to hear and write down these words.
Variation 1: Repeat this activity with other sentences to revise recently learnt vocabulary.
Variation 2: Do the activity without students writing the key words; instead, they discuss what they think after each sentence.
