Activities List

Stress Patterns

Aim:

to train students in basic stress patterns

Target Audience:

students

Relevance to KET:

all parts of the Listening paper

Organisation:

whole class activity

Materials needed:

teacher's 'script' (below)

1. Print out the 'script' and keep it with you for when a five-minute filler activity is needed. You can make up other sentences based on language you have been studying in class.

2. Tell students you are going to read some words from a sentence, and they should repeat exactly what you say.

3. Start at single word level.

4. Add to the string of words as indicated in the script below, making sure that you add stressed words first, then words which are pronounced weakly. Gradually speed up the delivery of the sentence.

5. With strong groups, establish a chain, with each student repeating what the last one said and adding another word, prompted by you. You could uncover the words students have to say on an OHT, or turn over cards.

Teacher's script

1) three

2) three...thirty

3) thirteen...three... thirty

4) There…thirteen...three...thirty

5) There…thirteen...three cars...thirty

6) There…thirteen...three cars...three thirty

7) There were thirteen of us in three cars at three thirty.
