Focus on Part 9 Assessment

Correction and Giving Feedback

Learners at this level require plenty of support and encouragement. It is easy for them to feel frustrated that they are unable to express themselves as well as they would like to. For this reason it is important to correct and give feedback sensitively.

  • Don't always correct every mistake on the page, especially if there are a lot. It can be discouraging to get back a page of work that is covered in red ink.

  • Focus on what the student has done well as well as on mistakes. Students at this level need lots of encouragement.

  • Work on students' own mistakes. When students are writing in class, go round and note down 10 sentences with mistakes. Later, give these sentences back to students, 5 still with mistakes and 5 corrected. Students then have to discuss with their partner which sentences are correct and which are not.

  • Encourage students to read and correct each other's work, looking for spelling mistakes, wrong tenses or verb forms, pronoun mistakes, problems with word order and so on.

  • Use a marking code to get them to think for themselves about their mistakes, e.g. T for tense, S for spelling, WO for word order, G for grammar and WW for wrong word.

  • Get them to rewrite work after you have marked it.

  • If you have access to a language lab, try marking on tape. Instead of writing on the student's script, record the correct version onto a tape. Give the tape and work to the student. The student then listens and rewrites the work at home.

  • Students can use a word processing programme, like Word, to type their work. You can then insert pop-up comments and students can rework their writing in the same document.
