Letter of advice from a Cambridge ESOL oral examiner

Dear Students,

I have been an examiner for many years and I am going to give you some advice.

I hope you will not be too nervous on the day of your Speaking test. You must show the examiner how well you can speak English. You must speak as much as you can. Listen very carefully and answer all the questions. Sometimes you can answer with one or two words, but always try to say more if you can. Don't prepare long answers before the test.

Say hello to your partner outside the room if you don't know him or her. The examiner is marking you one by one. If your partner seems better than you, don't worry. Just do your best.

Take your coat off before you go in. Smile before you begin. Speak to the examiner in the first part. In Part 2 when you speak to your partner, turn your chair towards your partner. Don't worry about making mistakes, but correct yourself if you can.

Try to relax and enjoy the test. Good luck!
