PET Reading Part 1
Task Description
What do the candidates have to do?
The candidates have to read five short texts (notices / signs
/ labels / instructions / personal messages etc.) and match the
meaning of the short text with one of the three multiple-choice
options.
What does this part test?
This part tests the candidates' understanding of the main meaning
of various kinds of short, real-world texts.
Is there any other information given to contextualise the texts?
There is often visual information showing the location of the
sign or notice, which may help candidates in identifying the purpose
of the text.
Where do candidates write their answers?
The instructions at the beginning of the task tell candidates
to write their answers on the answer sheet by marking either A,
B or C.
Understanding the Task
To understand better how students need to approach this task, it
may help you to do the activity yourself, and analyse what you had
to do to choose the right answer. Look at this Reading Part 1 from
the PET Handbook. Complete the task, thinking about how you are
doing it.
