PET Speaking Part 2
Task Description
What do the candidates have to do?
Candidates are given a situation and some pictures and have to talk
to each other to complete a task based on them.
What does the examiner have to do?
The examiner tells the candidates about the task, repeats the instructions
and gives the candidates the visual material.
What is the purpose of this part?
This part tests the candidates' ability to make and respond to suggestions,
discuss alternatives, make recommendations and negotiate agreement
with their partner.
How long does this part last?
This part of the test lasts between 2 and 3 minutes.
What kind of situations will candidates have to talk about?
Candidates may be shown pictures of different activities and have
to select the best one based on some requirement or condition. For
example they may have to decide on the best way for someone to keep
cool in a hot country. In the example given below candidates are
asked to select the most important things to take on a trip to England
from a range which includes warm clothing with an umbrella, a wallet
of money and credit cards, a camera etc.

To understand better how students need to approach this task, it
may help you to do the activity yourself, and analyse what you had
to do. Look at the sample Part 2 materials. Complete the task as
a pair. Think about what the candidates have to do.
