Meet the Class

Aim:

to practise giving personal details, forming questions and developing listening skills as an 'ice-breaking' activity

Target Audience:

students or teachers who don't know each other very well

Relevance to PET:

Speaking Test - Part 1

Organisation:

whole class

Materials needed:

worksheet

  1. Depending on the size of your class and the time available, either do this as a whole class or divide the class up into smaller groups of about 10-15. Remember that every member of the group is going to have to try to speak to everyone else in the group.

  2. Give each person a worksheet. There is one supplied here, but you might want to change it if your entire group are from the same town or if it's not appropriate to ask about age etc.

  3. The individual members of the group walk around the class, asking their questions and making brief notes of the answers.

  4. Give the group enough time to ask their questions and collect the information. You might want to join in yourself if you don't know the people in the group.

  5. Ask everyone to sit down but not show their notes to anyone.

  6. Ask someone to stand up and tell the class about 1 of the people they met. They should give as much information as they have on that person but not the name.

  7. The rest of the group listen to the information and check it against the information they collected. If they think they know the name of the person being talked about, they should put up their hand and say the name of the person they think it is.

  8. The person whose name has been mentioned should then confirm whether it's them or not.

  9. Now ask another person to stand up and repeat the process from step 6, until everyone in the group has been mentioned.
