Materials needed:

whiteboard and task cards

  1. On the whiteboard, write the following headings and ask students for examples of each:
  • Suggest
  • Show preferences
  • Agree
  • Disagree
  • Recommend
  • Give reasons
  • Sum up
  1. Leave the phrases on the board so that students can refer to them while doing the activity.

  2. Divide the class into pairs and give them one of the situations on the worksheet. Make sure that a similar number of pairs are doing each of the situations.

  3. Ask the pairs to discuss the topic and to come to a decision only after they have talked about all five options.

  4. Go around the class, monitoring their performance.

  5. When they have finished the task, find out what they decided upon.
