Kinds of Speaking

Aim:

to check and extend trainees’ understanding of terms related to speaking

Target Audience:

teacher trainers/candidates

Relevance to TKT:

Module 1 Part 1

Organisation:

whole class then pair/group/individual then whole class

Materials needed:

worksheets possibly for restricted practice activity and task
  1. Put these terms on the board:

    accuracy, fluency, connected speech, guided/restricted/controlled practice, communicative activity

  2. Ask the trainees to work in pairs to try to define the terms verbally to each other. Refer them to the TKT Glossary to check the meaning of any terms they are unsure of.

  3. Ask the trainees concept questions to ensure they understand the terms.

  4. Drill the terms chorally and individually before conducting a written controlled practice activity (e.g. a gap-fill activity).

  5. Ask the group to recap the activities used and to decide which terms the activities involved.

  6. Class discussion of answers.

Notes/Variations:

  • You may prefer to conduct discussions in the trainees’ first language.
